Our Laba Congee

Laba congee, also known as laba porridge, was traditionally consumed to celebrate the Laba Festival on the eighth day of the last lunar month. The Laba Festival was a ritual that celebrated good harvests and ancestors. The celebration of the festival also has a rich and deep root in Buddhism. The legend says that the celebration on the eighth day of the last lunar month also coincides with the day of the Buddha’s enlightenment

The tradition of eating Laba congee during the Laba Festival could be traced back to Song Dynasty about 900 years ago. Laba congee was often prepared by Buddhist temples and monasteries as an offering to devotees and visitors during the Laba Festival. It is not only a day of celebration, but also a day of charity.

Nowadays, Laba Festival is a prelude to the celebration of the Spring Festivals. Laba congee has become every household’s must-have comfortable food and is beloved by the Chinese people.

Traditional laba congee is made with beans, black rice, lotus seeds, and dried fruits. It is rich and dense in nutrients and flavor. All ingredients need to be rinsed and soaked for hours and then boiled overnight. The flavor of laba congee is a harmonious blend of sweetness and gentle nuttiness. Each spoonful of laba congee offers a gentle and nuanced flavor that is both comforting and satisfying, making it a beloved dish during special occasions and winter seasons.
